Event Description: After a long, cold winter of being cooped up indoors most of us are only too grateful to trade in our hats and gloves for bathing suits and sunglasses. But with that beautiful, warm weather also come the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays, which can be very dangerous to you and your loved ones. In honor of Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection Month, Northside Hospital is hosting its annual community skin cancer screenings at all three hospital campuses in May. "Skin cancer is the most common type of malignancy, but fortunately most skin cancers are curable if detected early,” said Patti Owen, director of oncology services, Northside Hospital. "Our free skin cancer screenings emphasize the need for early detection and teach participants about sun safety.” At the 2008 screenings, Northside staff screened 244 participants. Of those screened, 71 people were recommended for follow-up treatment because of abnormal findings. Northside Hospital's free skin cancer screenings offer participants full or partial body assessments, conducted in private settings by licensed medical staff and physicians.
