Event Description: Beginning this month, the Small Business Services Center will host monthly webinars presented by Fisher & Phillips LLP on different labor or employment law topics. The first topic is “Workforce Reductions- Reducing the Legal Risks of Reduction in Force to be presented via webinar at 2:00 pm on January 27. The current economy is forcing many employers to downsize their operations. Fisher & Phillips LLP is offering free webinars to employers on how to minimize the risk of employee claims and lawsuits when conducting layoffs. It will address the impact of federal and state WARN laws, avoidance of discrimination claims when selecting employees for layoff, and the laws affecting severance pay and severance agreements. The program will also address means to retain essential talent, to support those employees who are in transition, and to effectively communicate with employees regarding workforce reductions. Future topics will include wage and hour, FMLA, OSHA, garnishments, immigration, the nuts and bolts of hiring and firing, benefits, discrimination and harassment, and the Employee Free Choice Act.
