Event Description: Join a National Park Service Ranger, Jerry Hightower, for a loop hike through a beautiful forest that was once home to American Indians. Imagine a bustling village, dugout canoes on the river bank, smoldering fires smoking fish and game, and piles of freshwater mussel shells. For at least eight thousand years people have used this area. For these people the forests and river were supermarket, building supply, clothier, and drug store. During this walk you will visit the largest natural rock shelter in the park and hear fascinating facts concerning these people’s uses of the available resources to survive and even prosper. We will also enjoy a morning with the autumn colors and perhaps a purple flowered gentian or two, and the signs of the area’s rich diversity of wildlife. Note: The $3 Daily Park Pass is not required for vehicles displaying a current Annual Park Pass or America the Beautiful Pass! Reservations are required; please call 678-538-1200 to make your reservation, space is limited!
